I read that about an hour ago. It looks like E6 is having trouble hanging on.

There are 13 E6 film varieties in production currently. Hopefully that won't change soon. I'm not ready to see E6 disappear yet.
I wonder if the mad dash to use up Kodachrome before the end of the year has any impact on the amount of E6 currently being processed. I know I've only shot one roll of E6 in the last half year, for example. All of my fall foliage shots are going to be on Kodachrome this year. Dwayne's has a huge announcement on their main webpage underneath the details about Kodachrome being discontinued: "Dwayne's Photo is not closing!" I could see how that might be necessary given all the confusion already about what is discontinued and what isn't.

Rather an illogical jump to make the cessation of E6 processing by one lab into the headline "Passing of E6" and the "Passing of an Era"! It's this kind of biased journalism that leads to incorrect rumours. :(
I'd predict that in 100 years time that analogue photography could well be dead. But then so will we all, so I'll carry on shooting my K-14 until December, then back to E6, C41, B&W and digital, and not let it bother me. :)

That's not what it's based on, one lab closing. He's simply using it as an example. Many labs, not just one, have stopped doing E6 because there is little demand at their doors. The E6 film selection has dwindled considerably as well. There used to be 2x-3x more types available ten years ago.
I hate to say it, but E6 appears to be in a similar position to what Kodachrome was in 10-15 years ago. Even some professional C-41 film types have been slashed from production this past year.
And now this as well. Even C-41 may in danger ultimately: http://www.apug.org/forums/forum172/81371-big-blow-film-production-kodak-fuji.html
I hope these threads and articles don't make people give up hope. They are tiresome to read at the least. There are still quite a few color films available in both E6 and C-41. My local Costco still develops C-41. As long as they do this, I'm not going to get too alarmed.

Based on what I have seen, C41 seems to be dwindling as well. Yes, drugstore processing (ie Walgreens, Costco, etc) is still available. But pro-labs which processed both E6 and C41 seem to be switching to digital printing.

Dwayne's HAS to put this on their page. They know just as well as I do that business will be at least a little tougher for them without offering Kodachrome processing. Although Dwayne's will still have their accounts with businesses (like Walmart) for C41 and/or E6 processing, they will now have to compete for customers with faster and cheaper (due to no shipping) local options that people generally have.
