View Full Version : What do you use to shoot your Kodachrome

For me I use several film bodies. My primary is my Nikon F100 and Nikkor 28-105D, but I use my FE2's and FM3a with several primes almost as much. As a matter a fact I tend to have what I call MF Nikon's day where I shoot nothing but my older MF Nikon's.

F100 w/MB-15 Nikkor 28-105D
FE2 and FM3a w/ 50 f2 Ai and 28 f2.8E, 100 f2.8E, 135 f2.8E and 75-150 f3.5E I really love my Nikon series E lens. Oh and my big gun Nikkor 500 f4 Ai-P!

Flash I use my SB-30 and SB-600 on all of my film Nikon's.

Jim

So let us know what you are using!

Bodies: Nikon F100 and FM2n. I tend to pick up the FM2n slightly more often because it's smaller and lighter.

Lenses: Mostly a bunch of primes, both AF and manual focus. That's more fun than zooms. A recently added favorite is the 105mm f/2.5 AI-s. Another one that gets a lot of use is my 24mm f/2.8 AI - I like the field of view.

Flashes: SB-28 and SB-600

Filters: Polarizer, used carefully! And I use 81B quite often with Kodachrome on cloudy days, or when shooting in the shade.

Back in the day (ie early 1980s), I used a Petri 7s rangefinder camera that my grandpa gave me. Interestingly, the exposure meter seemed to be REALLY well calibrated for use with Kodachrome. Then again, aperture was infinitely adjustable. And this was probably REALLY an asset for shooting slides. On the other hand, I was stuck with a 45mm lens that could not be changed. These days, I use a Canon Elan IIe body. About six months ago, I decided I wanted to shoot slides again. So I picked this body up for a song on craigslist. Unlike an older body, it had the advantge of being able to share all the EF lenses that I already had for my Rebel XT DSLR. But I have one complaint about it: aperture and shutter speeds are only adustable in half stops. This is certainly not the best thing for a 'slide camera'.

Nikon FE - 2 bodies, but one's in the shop.
Nikkor A1-S - 24mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2, 85 f/2, 105 f/4 Micro. (55 f/3.5 Micro is in the shop too. It may be lost forever.)
The Nikon FEs are my only cameras.

Sunpak 411 - needs to be replaced. Works with duct tape.

12nov08 - FE returned with new light seals and reassemble rewind mechanism. 55 f/3.5 repaired.

Seems cliche to post otherwise, but I shot my first roll with a Rebel 2000 back in 2003, my first slides I think, as I'd been all business, all negatives up until that point. Kodachrome 200, KR. Got some gorgeous stuff back, especially considering my lack of landscape experience at the time. Need to dig those slides up again. . .

Since then, I've used just whatever 35mm I've been using as my goto pseudo-photojournalistic camera at the time.

However, I've finally settled on the F4 system, and the results the combination has given me has been superb. Too bad I can't have the chance to shoot K25 or K200 with it, but to be honest, K64 tends to be what I would have resorted to for 90% of my stuff, as I tend to use Kodachrome to shoot time or fall color stuff in less-than stellar weather and the reciprocity of K25 wasn't great, and I don't have all super-fast glass.

Polarizer is a standby on my camera now. I use that with K64 and the F4 all the time.

Canon EOS 30, with the following lenses:

EF 20mm f/2.8
EF 50mm f/1.4
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 (non usm, non IS)

I love the first two lenses, while the third gives *okay* image quality - certainly nothing that pushes the sharpness of Kodachrome to the test anyway.

All of them are real cameras. :)

Canon QL17 GIII. Most of my recent K'chrome is with this.

Also Mamiya SD and Pentax K1000.

I do carry an Olympus P&S as my carry-everywhere camera, but I've never tried K'chrome in it. It's exclusively C41.

Hi Jim, kodachrome 40 is still available in the double super 8 format. Double/regular 8 k40 is also available, this is repackaged k40 sold under the 'wittnerchrome 40' name, here is the link http://www.wittner-kinotechnik.de/katalog/04_filmm/d8_filmm.php . Of course there is no more cine kodachrome manufactured. Once Wittner has sold out, that really will be the end of k/c on the cine format, i know of no other stockists.

In my previous reply I only listed the equipment I use for still photography, silly me.

For 8mm cine Kodachrome, I use a Bolex Paillard P2 regular 8mm camera with a 9-30 mm f/1.9 zoom lens, and also a Camex Ercsam with a 12mm f/1.9 lens.

For 16mm work, I use a Bolex H16 reflex system with Schneider Kreuznach prime lenses.

I started out (1978) using an Olympus OM-1 & 50mm/1.4. I eventually added another body & more lenses, favoring the shorter lenses or short zooms over the longer stuff.

Initially, I ran mostly KM in the quest for tighter grain. But a (1981) trip to San Francisco had me shooting similar scenes with both films. It was then that I discovered I could see no grain difference in my enlargements (8x10). Unexpectedly, the color difference between shots of the same areas convinced me to permanently switch to KR. Of course, long before this trip, I had run the exposure verification test to determine that my OM meters required 1/3 stop less (32 & 80) on the ASA dial for proper reversal exposure of both films.

Most of that equipment was stolen years ago, & when I replaced it I bought Nikon. The exposure verification test showed that I didn't have to compensate the ASA setting for any of the bodies I've enjoyed (F3, F2, FM2). Today I'm left with my early model (non-HP) F3, which I usually fit with an 85mm/1.4 or 25-50/4.0. I rarely used my 70-210E for Chrome. I've replaced that lens with an 80-200/4.5. It seems to show the capabilities of KR better than the 70-210E did, but I haven't used it all that much yet. At the same time I picked up a 500mm/8.0 (cat). I really tried to like that lens but it just didn't fit my shooting style, so I recently sold it off. I also picked up a second F3, this one a later Ti model with the HP finder. It's in much better shape than the older body so I've been enjoying using it. I'd also like to get a 35mm/1.4, but the prices always seem to be just out of reach for me.

When K200 was available I used Nikon Fm2n, Fm3a and Nikkor 300, 400 and 500mm lenses. Now that K200 is gone, the Nikon's don't get much use with K64.
For K64 I use primarily two M7's with Motor M's and 35 1.4, 75 2.0, and 90 2.0 all ASPH lenses. With the Leica 21 mm 2.8 ASPH, I have been using an M6 with Metz handle flash for indoor work since I can't use the external finder and TTL flash at the same time. Time will tell how well this system works.
The loss of K200 has really hurt.-Dick

Mostly I use my Nikonos RS or Nikonos V underwater cameras, I keep using the Nikonos V because it has a sweet 15mm lens that give you a 94 degree angle of view underwater, and at f5.6 the depth of field is 18" to infinity, so K64 works best with my Ikelite strobes. The RS has a great 50mm macro that does 1:1 and I have a 2x converter I use most of the time to make it a 100mm at 2:1 if needed.

When I'm not breathing compressed air I have been know to run some through my Widelux 6B or my one of my many Nikon F2.

I rock two Fujica AX-5 bodies, both tuned up by the Camera Doctor in Decatur, Georgia. I have a pile primes to go with them, a 19mm, 28mm, 50mm, 100mm and 135mm. Most of the glass is f/2.8 or faster. I also have a 2x teleconverter. Usually I just use a polarizer with Kodachrome, but have been experimenting with diffusion and warming filters recently.

I have 2 K1000se's and a regular K1000 and i rotate them to keep them all active. When i am out "Railfanning"(I shoot railroad trains)I have one loaded with PKR64(which has been my film of choice as of late)and i have another loaded with K200(which i use if the weather gets cloudy)And if the shooting gets hot and heavy i have the 3rd body loaded with print film!!! For lens choice i use a 50mm F.2 and will sometimes use my 70-210mm Telephoto if i feel like something different.I just finished off a roll of PKR64 yesterday,so that roll is going out to Dwaynes a.s.a.p. I am gonna keep sooting Kodachrome until they dont process it anymore!!! KODACHROME-FOREVER!!! Have a great day everyone!!!

I have a bunch of cameras (they're so cheap now!), but last few years shot most Kodachrome on a Contax G1 (favourite lenses the 21mm and 90mm), Nikon F3 and Nikkormat FTN, and some this summer on a little Olympus Stylus Zoom (since was in beautiful places in fieldwork but limited to what I could carry in pack, already full of scientific stuff - I'm a field ecologist) and this weird Yashica Dental Eye III camera (it's got a great 100mm macro lens with ring flash; the pictures are amazing, with a weird 'chromium' 3-d effect from the close, even, intense light - I hope to pose some on my website when I get the time). Have shot some with a Olympus XA, too. Looking forward to trying my 'new' Contax RTS I (with 35mm and 50mm T* lenses) I and a few others with Kodachrome, too. Too bad I can't do some 120 on my much-loved Mamiya RB67!

I had a fairly young teacher back in high school who shot stereo. Stereo was the only thing he ever shot. The only film he ever shot was Kodachrome...25 back when you could still get it and then 64. He said 25 was the best film ever.

He ganged together 2 Canon Rebel G cameras from what I remember him saying.

I'm going to have to email him one of these days to tell him about the Kodachrome Project.

Hey, Dan!

Quick question on the FM2n...according to one article, that camera seems to slightly overexpose? Thom recommends shooting with the LEDs both flashing 0 and -1 at the same time...

Is that your experience?

Exactly how do you use the Fm2n to get consistent exposures?

thanks,

dave

Exactly how do you use the Fm2n to get consistent exposures?
I have personally not found an overexposure bias in the FM2n. But I think that far more important than worrying about that is to understand that it is a center-weighted, averaging meter and what that means. If there is a strong highlight in your scene (especially if it is near the center) the meter reading can lead to underexposure. Similarly, big dark areas can lead to overexposure, as the meter tries to make the dark areas 18% grey, which they should not be.

The FM2n's meter is very reliable, as center-weighted meters go, but don't follow it blindly without understanding what it's actually saying. For example, if there's nothing but snow in your picture, and you shoot according to the meter's reading, your shot will without a doubt be underexposed. The snow will be 18% grey, when it should be close to 100% white. This is not the fault of the meter - it cannot know that it is snow you're shooting!

And when in doubt, bracket.

I have been looking for a ratty-ass bag for my Leica gear for overseas. I have what I want now. A buddy of mine had this old Domke F-3X for years and said it was too small for his new digital rigs, wanted to use a backpack now. And no, that pretty and rare black MP-3 in my avatar won't be banging around in this bag.

So I washed it.....three times, put gaffers tape around the unraveling shoulder strap and used a beer cozy to put a bottom in an otherwise bottomless lens slot.

I like it. I will get it dirty and it will be perfect.

The only thing I might change is somehow install a steel cable the length of the shoulder strap to prevent thieves from cutting the strap and running, a practice in some countries. But then again, I am only using this satchel style so the contents will always be in front of me....

Seems like many people here think that you do need a Nikon camera to take a photograph!

I'm on my first batch of Kodachrome - I ran one roll through my A-1 using a 199B speedlite and mostly a 50mm f/1.4, but also the 35-70mm for a few shots... then the camera started acting funny, so I ran the last roll (and probably will run the next roll) through my Rebel K2 with the 28-90mm kit zoom and a fully dedicated Vivitar flash. I'm also thinking that my Fujica Compact Deluxe would work will with some.

EDIT: shooting with the Rebel has the added advantage that, if I also carry my digital Rebel, I only have to carry one flash and switch it back and forth between them!

About eight years ago, when digital cameras were becoming increasingly popular, I thought it was great, and started shopping -- for film gear. EBay has worked very well for me. KEH Camera Brokers is good also. The only item that I bought new is the 85mm f/1.8 AF-D lens. The F4 was purchased through a Photo.net classified ad.

I found the Olympus XA at our local used camera store. You are right, it takes very sharp, colorful photos, and is fun to use. Perhaps you could track one down!

I've been contemplating an XA for awhile now. I have an Oly-Pen half frame EES2 that I like to use. MOF there is a three month exhibit in Japan celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the Oly-Pen half frame camera. I plan to burn a couple of rolls to help celebrate:).

Hello Renato, I've seen you occasionally on the Large Format Forum. Interesting, I've done Kodachrome to Ilfochrome for years.

I use three Nikon FEs' with 21, 28, 35, 50, 200, 400 mm. fixed focus lenses. Also my beloved 75 to 150 Nikon cheapie zooms, but about the sharpest of the lot.
Also a 70-210 Nikon, 28-85 Vivitar and a 90 mm Macro Series 1 Vivitar.
I've always shot mostly Kodachrome and B&W.

Nate - I recognize your name from that forum also. Too bad there are a few miles between our respective cities. I am starting to get lonely printing on Ilfochrome...
When it became less convenient to get Kodachrome processed, I switched to Fuji on the advice of many: the Velvia and others did not print as well as the Kodachrome - I was experiencing color bleed. I also prefer the colors I get from Kodachrome (and Ektachrome for 4x5 and 120). So I am back to Kodachrome!
I used to use the Cibachrome drums and a few years ago I purchased the CAP40 Processor; I also "inherited" a never-used Durst Printo. These a great processors but I have wheel them in and out of the darkroom because space is tight. Eventually one of them will have to go.

So as not to get too off-topic, I also use the Rollei 3003 and my first camera, the Pentax Spotmatic II.

These days, I shoot Kodachrome with my $25 Canon EOS 3. I picked it up for that price because it has a crack in the viewfinder prism. But this has no effect on image quality. And the camera works fine otherwise. What I REALLY like about the EOS 3 is that I can use the same lenses on it as on my 5D. This is especially good while hiking, since I don't want to carry separate lenses for different cameras.

An Argus AF from the late 30s. It has a Cooke type three element lens and differs from the "A" because it will focus...big stuff for a cheap camera in those days. It cost $11.00 at Ship Stores on the USNA campus in about 1938 or so.

Seems to be an anti-Minolta bias - so I'll kick in with a pair of SRTs (201 and 202). Now looking at an XD-11 and maybe a Nikon FM2 (cheap now).

Just because not many of us use Minoltas doesn't mean there's an anti-Minolta bias. :)

Nikon guy here. FM2n, FE2, FA, F5 & F6 cameras. Use them all on different occasions. Mostly shooting with the F5 & F6 but I carry the FA around a lot.

Forgot to add, I've got a Stereo Realist my dad bought back in the early 50's. I've alway shot Kodachrome 64 in it. Having a harder time finding developing for them as well as mounts.

I shot my first roll of Kodachrome recently, with my Minolta SRT-101. I still have 5 rolls of Kodachrome 64 in the freezer, which someone gave me when I said I wanted to try Kodachrome. It's expired (from 1993), but my first roll came out great. If the weather is good, I'll definitely load the camera and take some more pictures this weekend. I think I'm getting a slide projector next week, when I get paid.

When I use up those rolls, I'll definite buy some more Kodachrome. I can already see that I'm going to be hooked. :D

Minolta was never one of the more popular brands to begin with. But what REALLY surprises me here is the fact that so few people here shoot Canons. After all, in the digital world, Canon is (along with Nikon) one of the 'Big Two'.

I am currently shooting all Canon. I shoot mostly with my AE-1 Program. About 3 or 4 years ago I got a brand new Rebel (film) for Christmas and it died in February :(, but my AE-1 is holding up well! I also have a couple of Canon Shureshots that I brink on hikes/biking trips. Never underestimate one of the little Canon Shureshots! They are great cameras.

If you want another Rebel, I highly suggest craigslist. Rebels are literally a dime a dozen. And cheap Elans (the next step up) can be found as well: I got a newer 7E that had barely been used for $80. Of course, my very best craigslist find is my EOS 3. It has a cracked prism. But if you can get over this, it works GREAT. Having shutter speed and aperture that are adjustable in third stops (vs half stops on Rebels and Elans) is a BIG plus when shooting chrome. The price? A whopping $25. This is not an extremely common deal. But the bottom line is that there are PLENTY of good deals to be found.

I mostly shoot Kodachrome in my Leica M2; but I have on the odd occassion used my EOS 3 (another recommendation from me on that one, it's a big camera mind.)

The 1/3rd stops mentioned above do help to some degree on the EOS 3 knowing how fickle Kodachrome is, but I find a bit of juidicious knowledge of exposure usually gets around these things, knowing the film you're shooting also helps somewhat. E.g. you know you can get away with it a little on Provia, EBX or Astia; but with Velvia or Kodachrome, be careful and meter that area you definitely want exposed correctly thoroughly.

That said, I've never had too many problems with my Leica MR meter which I use on the M2; which odd as it may sound, I've found its exposure pattern (I think it's center weighted) to be very accurate and I like the results generally better than what I get from my EOS 3 when using its evaluative meter (great well exposed results, but just lacking somrthing)

I have many Kodachromes taken with a Minolta HiMatic 7S rangefinder.
It is now the backup to my Nikon F2AS. Love that Minolta Rokkor Lens.
An SRT 101 is on my want list.

Last week I got a Leica R8 that was priced too attractively to pass up and this morning on Ebay I bought a motor drive for it. So far I've shot Fuji Reala 1600, Provia 400, Velvia 100, and a couple of rolls of Ektar, but no Kodachrome yet. I'll only start feeding it Kodachrome once I'm used to the way it meters in its various modes.

This is my 6th film camera!

Gotta disagree about Minolta... In the 60's and mid 70's the SR's and SRT's were really popular. I saw more 101's than Nikkormats, or Canon FTb's, by a lot. I'd venture to say that a lot more 101's were sold than either. Price worked against the Nikkormats to some extent. More than a few pro's used Minoltas and Pentaxes in the 60's and into the 70's. A lot of non photo people had heard of Minolta, Pentax and Yashica, but hadn't heard of Nikon or Canon. You know, the "my uncle has a Minolta" sort of knowledge. And later, the Maxxum was hugely popular when it came out.
I would say that, to me, examples of cameras that could be called "never one of the more popular brands", would be, Konica, Topcon, Fujica and Petri, though plenty were sold.

I couldn't resist buying a Nikon F Photomic FTN very cheaply priced that was gathering dust in a sleepy little shop nearby; my 7th film camera. it has a '72 serial number, making it 10 years younger than my F. The meter is working after a fashion but not giving anything close to correct readings. I'm hoping it can be repaired.

And JBA said, "Don't forget Miranda."

That's for sure. And Praktica. And a couple others that were considered second tier, though they might have sold enough to be considered popular (I don't know), were Mamiya/Sekor and Ricoh. Ricoh probably sold scads under the Sears name. And while not all machines were built like a Nikon F, lower popularity necessarily didn't mean lower quality, as anyone who's used (and hefted), say, a Topcon Super D or Konica T3 knows.

My first camera was a Fujica ST605 I got for Christmas '76. That same Christmas, my best friend got a Praktica LTL3. These were both decent cameras for the price. I'd been hoping for a Minolta SRT 200, but as I recall it was $150 and the Fujica was $130.

The very first 35mm SLR I ever used was a Mamiya/Sekor DTL1000 belonging to a friend of the family who taught me the basics of photography.

Ooooo, the 19! That's one well regarded lens. It's highly sought after in the screw mount. That's one lens I wish I'd bought for my old ST801's back in the day, instead of spending the money on food or some such nonsense. If I find one in X-mount I'm going to get a camera just for it. That old Fuji glass rocks! To me, pictures from them just look natural, the same way Kodachrome just looks natural. Their excellent multicoating let me put the sun in the frame, something I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be able to do.
I put the 55mm f/3.5 up head to head with the 55mm f/3.5 Micro-Nikkor with Nikon's first multicoating and it was just as good with less flare, and much smaller and lighter. And that Nikkor was one sweet lens.
I've read that Fuji made a screw-mount lens to X-mount camera adapter that had a mechanism to actuate the diaphragm pin. Something I wish my K-mounts had.

Great site, Dan! I just discovered it.

I'll be working in Korea for two years starting in September this year. I hope to shoot about 200 rolls of KR-64 during that time. Will Kodachrome be around until 2011? I'm optimistic that it will be.

I'll be shooting this project with a Leica MP and a 35mm Summicron ASPH.
