Hi folks,
My girlfriend wants to help me get my feet back on the ground financially speaking and wants to design a Kodachrome calendar for next year. I am just putting the feelers out there to see if there were any interest. I have no idea how much they would cost, personally, I think the return on investment would be small, but she just wants me to post this anyway. Chime in with your thoughts..

It could be feasible if you publish it yourself. That way you wouldn't have a big upfront cost. I'd imagine there are some templates out on the net.

I wonder when the 2010 calendars went to press? Wonder when the retailers placed their orders?
Would you do 2011? Maybe you should try SC Johnson the manufacturer. Some corporate entity with a "green" image. How many episodes in Ken Burn's National Parks series? Don't take me seriously. I believe in your photography, it's the market that I don't trust. And sometimes disrespect. I wonder if people buy calendars based on price. If think so. I'd hate to see your images poorly printed. I think your forte is people in an environment. Normally I don't see many wall calendars like such that I like, except for scantily clad females, and heck with the environment. So anyway, no disrespect to your girlfriend. Good luck in whatever you decide. Nonsense it may be, but many of your images evoke feelings in tune with those Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post covers. But he didn't need to worry about model releases .... Again, good luck. |

As Brian Kim suggests, it is too late to do this as a large-scale commercial enterprise. Printing a few tens or hundreds for interested people is quite different - you can find a local printer, whose work you can inspect at each step, and who will print as many as you want. I was involved with a similar project for a quite different special interest group and the members purchased one or two each, plus about the same number was sold on eBay to others who were interested. We included dates relevant to the interest - how about putting introduction and dicontinuation dates for different Kodachromes in this calendar? And emphasise the last processing date in BIG BOLD LETTERS, as also the last mailing dates to hit this, and the last processing date for process-paid films.
We did find that repeating the project a year later was a big financial failure - peope were not interested in a second similar specialist calendar a year later. But please do it if you have the time! Don't let it interfere with your prime aim of photographing the country, though, Wlodek |

I'd love a calendar. Some crisp colour printing on bright white paper would be great!
I work at Canon here in Australia and Canon Inc. (Japan) puts out a calendar once a year with the best images from around the world. I'm not sure if you have seen it but the images are stunning! |

My girlfriend and I are still looking into it, I have a relative in California that does printing, perhaps we can add it to the tail end of a bigger job. She is designing it right now.
We just can't put a lot of money for it up front, I have been basically unemployed since early July....and to be honest, I have thought about selling the Kodachrome Project, site, film, rights to another party, it is just getting really bad with next to nothing for an income. So I am hoping to raise a little money for the project with the calendar. It would be a one time thing, no calendar for the following year and would probably only sell on the site. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Dan, if you have limited funds, maybe you should ask for prepaid orders for the calendar. Estimate a price and add 50%.
If enough prepaid orders come in, and if you and your girlfriend decide to go ahead, you will have the funds. If you decide not to go ahead, you could offer a couple of options to those who prepaid. Perhaps these options could be either 1. transfer the prepayment to be a donation to the Project, or 2. use it to buy a Project shirt. I hope it works out, and that you manage to stay with the Project. Thanks for all your work. |

i would buy the calendar as well, as long as it's under $20. i'm a full time AmeriCorps volunteer so the budget is tight.
