I never thought I would be buying another film SLR, as the only cameras I shoot film with these days are my Leicas. But after reading some of Dan's posts, I soon realized that I will be missing out on some great opportunities if I don't incorporate an SLR into my project.
I have some nice Canon glass, including a 100-400 IS L that I use for wildlife photography when shooting my DSLRs. A friend has invited me to join him at a Green Packer football game next year in his skybox seats, and I knew a rangefinder would not cut it for that shoot. So I went on ebay to see what I could find. Today, just before leaving for the Dairyland Greyhound Park to kill some KR-64, the mail lady delivered the package! It's a Canon Elan II with the BP50 battery pack. I knew I would want this because the IS on the 100-400 can give the batteries quite a beating. Well, the best part about this purchase was the price...I paid only $18 for both the camera body and the grip! When I began my search for a Canon EOS film SLR, I realized that I might not be using this camera anymore after December 31, 2010, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it. I'll be sending off my test roll to Dwayne's next week. It's a good thing I ran a test roll too. I didn't have an instruction manual with the camera, so I went into the shoot today a bit blind as to it's operation and settings. After downloading a manual on-line after returning home, I realized that what I thought was a burst rate setting, was actually a multiple-exposure setting! Other than that operator error, I think everything is working well with the camera. Dairyland Greyhound Park is the last remaining greyhound track in Wisconsin. New Years Eve is their last day of operation, and I will be there firing off a good stash of my KR-64, to record an appropriate farewell to greyhound racing in Wisconsin. |

Yeah, like you said, Chris...for less money than a roll of KR-64. Who would of thunk?
Brian, I've been looking for subject matter that would be in it's "last days", and when I thought about the greyhound track, I thought it would be perfect! However, I'm not sure how well it will actually work out. As you said, "slow film and fast dogs". Last week end, I went to the track and shot off a roll of KR-64, which will be going off to Dwaynes tomorrow. I also brought my DSLR along, but was very disappointed when I saw how the shots came out. My panning skills are way off, and that was even at higher shutter speeds than I'll be able to shoot with the KR-64. What I really need is some "fresh" 200, but I tried to bid on some at evil bay least week, and it just went over what I was willing to pay. Does anyone have any that they might be willing to trade for some fresh KR-64? |

I just bought a new lens to focus light onto some kodachrome, but I have had the camera a few years..... but it should be a fun lens..... 13 mm for the underwater Nikonos RS.
